Gibson Flying V archive · traditional 1967 reissue family

1982 Gibson Flying V

The finish evidence below concerns the regular mahogany Flying V in the 1967 reissue style. The archive also has a separate Custom Shop example with a black stripe; its original status is unknown.

Regular Flying V finish evidence

Dealer-documented, year-attributed examples support Black, Natural, Alpine White and Silverburst on the regular mahogany Flying V in the 1967 reissue style. A Chicago Music Exchange Silverburst listing describes the finish as original, dates its serial number to 1982 and identifies a stop-bar tailpiece. These examples do not establish a complete factory finish schedule or whether each finish represents new production or dealer carryover.

No reliable 1982 production total or finish-by-finish quantities have been located.

Separate 1981–1982 string-through model

Gibson also produced a mahogany string-through Flying V during 1981–1982. The 2014 Vintage Guitar Price Guide reports 100 guitars for the run as a whole, not a 1982-only total. See the dedicated FF-82 / mahogany string-through page.

1982 Custom Shop archive example

The white guitar with a black stripe is identified in the original archive as a 1982 Custom Shop V. Its caption says there is no indication whether the stripe is original and suggests it may have been added over the white base.
